Lidu, one of the youth at FriendsPDX, made the most of her time in the program by developing important skills that will serve her well towards her goal of graduating college in five years and attending medical school.

"My best memory at FriendsPDX was getting to know and familiarize myself with such a friendly environment and people,” said Lidu. “From playing in the gym, to cooking, to playing board games and attending events, [it] was an unforgettable experience.”

Mary Atyemizian serves as a Donor Officer and has a passion for higher education and career development, supporting many youth like Lidu at FriendsPDX through the years. Mary was constantly inspired by Lidu and her hard work ethic, leadership, and communication skills.

“I don’t think I’ve met anyone as determined to succeed as Lidu,” said Mary. “I advised her to join clubs to gain leadership experience; a year later she was President of the Environmental Club! Lidu’s self-motivation and drive inspire me. She’s unstoppable.”

Lidu packed her afternoons with activities at FriendsPDX. She worked at a kindergarten, played tennis, and connected with other high schoolers interested in environmental sustainability. She credits being in clubs and taking rigorous classes with teaching her how to communicate effectively and succeed in high school.

One of Mary’s favorite stories about Lidu speaks to her compassion for giving.

“When I first met her a few years ago, Lidu was trying a new smoothie recipe,” said Mary. “She asked if I wanted any and I couldn’t say no. She pulled out an extra cup and started serving me and her mentor. She gave us full cups and served herself what was left over. I took the smaller cup and thought to myself – not all high schoolers are this conscientious! She always thinks of others and tries her best to give back.”

When asked what advice she would give to new youth of the program, Lidu said, “FriendsPDX has so many kinds of opportunities for every kid to immerse themselves into. Put yourself out there and take advantage of the opportunities given to you. It is really an otherworldly experience and I’m so thankful for being a part of it.”
